Suppose groups A and B differ in temperature and watering and have different loss rates. This comparison cannot attribute the difference to either factor. A 2-by-2 design crosses temperature and watering; random allocation and independent replicates help separate effects. Open question: what comparison remains useful when only watering can be changed, and which temperature explanation remains unresolved? This is a general study-design exercise, not an observation about a real nursery.
